The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) was Established in 1943 by a referendum vote of landowners.  The District is governed by a board of five supervisors who are residents of the county.  These citizens are elected by their peers and serve for a three-year term.

The District is a local subdivision of Indiana State Government, responsible for leadership in the conservation of Monroe County’s natural resources: soil, water, air, wildlife, forests and lakes.  The SWCD Board meets monthly and all meetings are open to the public.
 
The Soil and Water Conservation District provides advice, assistance, and leadership to local land users in matters concerning natural resource conservation. This assistance is give through a partnership agreement with Natural Resources Conservation Service, an agency of USDA; the Indiana Department of Natural Resources; Purdue Cooperative Extension; The County of Monroe and other state and federal agencies.  Cooperation with the District is voluntary.
